The mantra was the only thing that propelled Cat as she marched down the hall and waited as the elevator took her to the lobby.

She was about to step outside of the lobby, when she had a single, solitary moment of hesitation. She suddenly had a really bad feeling.

Not so much of a feeling, because she was numb to her core, but more of an intuitive urging.

There was no way in hell she'd go back up to the condo, but someone needed to be there. Alec couldn't be alone like this. Cat had no idea when he'd leave for Boston, but someone needed to be with him until he did. And since it couldn't be her, she decided to call the next available person.

Except she couldn't. She'd left her phone charging in the kitchen last night and never picked it back up. And, once again, there was no way in hell she'd go back up to the condo.

Thank God for the courtesy phone.

"Whaddup, Cat? What can I do for ya?" Richie answered casually.

Cat spoke urgently. "Richie, you need to go to Alec's condo right now."

"What! What happened?"

"Something awful. He can't be alone right now."

"Well where are you?"

"I'm-I'm just…not there. I'm not there, and I never can be again."

Richie's voice grew concerned. "What happened? He didn't hit you, did he?"

Cat rolled her eyes. "Of course not. But he-he just…he kicked me out. He's in a really bad place and…you just need to be there for him."

"He kicked you out? Are we talking about the same Alec? What in the hell is going on?"

"I already told you! Just stop what you're doing and go now!"

Cat slammed the phone down. There was nothing else to say, and she knew abruptly ending the call would spur Richie to act. And just like that, her obligations to Alec were finished.

She pushed through the doors of the lobby and a freezing gust of wind blasted her face. It was all the motivation Cat needed to remind her that, from here on out, she was in survival mode.

Three ideas. Cat had three ideas to keep her from a terrifying fate of having literally nothing, with no escape from it.

Plan A: her old apartment.

She had signed all the paperwork to relinquish it earlier that week, but the lease was technically not up until Sunday.

Forty-five minutes and two bus connections later, she sprinted up the steps of the place that used to be her home.

Cat didn't let herself think about the fact that everything about this place was synonymous with Alec.

From the first moment she'd seen his gorgeous eyes on the day she moved in, to the first time she'd made him pancakes, to the first time she'd fought with him, when she'd sung for him and let him see the depths of her grief over her family, to the first time she'd really kissed him, and when they finally…well…all of the firsts. Every beautiful, wonderful, and heartbreaking first.

But this was not the time to mourn her losses or wistfully reminisce over everything he meant to her.
